Over 30 families and dozens of individuals are facing displacement from a mobile home community in Dripping Springs, Texas. These families, some of whom have been living there for decades, received a letter on July 29 instructing them to move their homes and belongings within 60 days, or risk having their items considered abandoned.
Irving Avila, a resident who has lived in the community for 19 years with his family, expressed his surprise at the sudden notice. He mentioned that there had always been rumors about the community being relocated, but the current situation felt unexpected.
The letter, provided to KXAN, stated that Gateway Development LLC is the owner of the land. Despite attempts to reach out to the company for a response, there has been no reply at this time. Efforts are ongoing to obtain more information on this matter.
Many residents in the community feel that the 60-day timeline is rushed, especially considering the long-term residents and families with school-aged children. The start of classes at Dripping Spring ISD schools is approaching, and there are concerns about the impact on students’ enrollment status.
In response to the distress of the community members, Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra visited the area to offer assistance and support. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the families and promised to make every effort to help them during this difficult time.
Following a demonstration by the affected residents, Judge Becerra engaged in discussions with a representative from Gateway Development LLC. The company expressed a willingness to accommodate those who may need more than 60 days to complete their relocation process. Additionally, efforts are being made to identify new mobile home neighborhoods within Dripping Springs to prevent disruptions to students’ education.
Avila emphasized the importance of finding a solution that allows everyone in the community to secure a new living arrangement. While he understands that change is inevitable, he hopes for additional time to facilitate a smoother transition for all those affected.
Overall, the situation in the Dripping Springs mobile home community highlights the challenges faced by residents when confronted with sudden displacement. The collaborative efforts of local officials and community members are crucial in addressing these issues and ensuring a more compassionate and sustainable outcome for those affected.
