According to a recent poll conducted by the University of Houston and Texas Southern University, the majority of Texans believe that there is a housing affordability crisis in the state. 90% of respondents stated that housing costs are a concern, with 44% describing it as a “big problem” and 46% as “somewhat of a problem.”

Mark Jones, a senior research fellow at the University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs, discussed the survey’s findings with Texas Standard. He noted that almost all Texans agree that housing affordability is an issue, with only 10% saying otherwise. Lower-income individuals, as well as Latino and Black Texans, are more likely to view housing affordability as a significant problem compared to higher-income and white Texans.

The perception of the severity of the issue varies based on income levels and racial demographics. Those who are earning less than $60,000 a year and belong to minority groups tend to see housing affordability as a more pressing concern. This disparity highlights the challenges faced by individuals living closer to the margins of their means.

From a policy standpoint, the widespread consensus on the issue offers an opportunity for bipartisan cooperation. While two-thirds of Democrats and half of Republicans support government policies to address housing affordability for low and middle-income Texans, there is room for building a coalition to tackle the issue effectively.

As the Legislature reconvenes in January, there may be a push for policy changes to address housing affordability. While Republicans may focus on school property taxes, Democrats are likely to advocate for government programs and subsidies to increase affordable housing options. Finding common ground and compromise will be essential in addressing the housing crisis in Texas.

Furthermore, the survey revealed that utility bills and homeowner’s insurance are major sources of financial strain for homeowners and renters alike. These additional expenses add to the overall burden of housing costs for many Texans.
