Young Gen Z no longer understands Millennials. This is due to their use of outdated phrases and slang words in everyday language.

21-year-old Allegra Miles takes on the millennial generation on TikTok. She particularly makes fun of the behavior and language use of those born between 1981 and 1995. According to Allegra, this is characterized by outdated phrases.

Their main concern is that Millennials should stop using old-fashioned phrases and slang that are no longer considered “cool” by the younger generation. According to her, words like “vibe” or “slay” and the expression “YOLO” (in German: “You only live once”) are a thing of the past. The 21-year-old is amused by the fact that millennials still stick to using these expressions.

Some Millennials argue in the comments that language is not fixed in specific generations and everyone has the freedom to use the words he or she prefers. Another user asks: “How old am I when I still say ‘Carpe Diem’?”

Despite the discussions, the young woman definitely has a point. The evolution of language is an ongoing process and certain terms may actually become obsolete over time. However, whether Millennials will actually adapt their language use remains to be seen.

In this country, the election of youth word of the year causes a stir and discussion every year. In 2023, “goofy” was chosen as the youth word of the year. It describes a clumsy, chaotic or even silly person or behavior.

This was followed by “Side eye” in second place and “NPC”, i.e. “Non-player character”, in bronze. The “Tagesschau”, among others, reported on this. The election for youth word of the year 2024 is still pending. However, according to “Zeit”, the term “delulu” in particular – i.e. “delusional” (in German: “delusional”) – is already expected to have great opportunities.
