Copper thieves steal cables in Barcelona and paralyze almost all local transport. The incident falls on the day of the regional elections.
Copper thieves largely paralyzed the S-Bahn in the greater Barcelona area on the very day of the regional elections in Catalonia. Almost the entire network in the tourist metropolis and the surrounding area has been affected since unknown people stole cables containing the coveted non-ferrous metal early on Sunday morning (May 12th), rail operator Adif announced on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
The theft resulted in parts of the power grid being overloaded and numerous cable fires. It is unclear how long the extensive repair work would take and when rail operations could be resumed.
The rail network with S-Bahn and local trains, which is called Rodalies in Catalonia, is very extensive at around 460 kilometers and extends to Girona in the north. According to the regional government, 130 million passengers were transported last year.
