European production company StudioCanal released the first trailer for the biopic Back to Black on Thursday, which traces Amy Winehouse’s short time on earth.
It is the British actress Marisa Abela, known for her role in the series Industry, who plays the famous singer-songwriter. The film was directed by British videographer Sam Taylor-Johnson, (behind the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey), with the blessing of the Amy Winehouse Foundation, set up by the singer’s family.
Back to Black will tell the “extraordinary story” of Amy Winehouse, from her teenage years in small London clubs to international fame. The film “pays homage to Amy’s artistry, wit and honesty, while trying to understand her demons” – including her complicated relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil.
The biopic Back to Black will be released on May 10 in the US and April 12 in the UK.
In 2015, the documentary Amy, by director Asif Kapaida, highlighted the addictions of Amy Winehouse, who died in 2011 from an alcohol overdose at the age of 27.
