The Academy on Thursday revealed the shortlisted films in 10 categories for the 2024 Oscar race.
Three Quebec short films were selected: Chat mort, by Annie-Claude Caron and Danick Audet, Invincible, by Vincent-René Lortie, and Oasis, by Justine Martin.
On the documentary side, the feature film To Kill a Tiger, by Toronto filmmaker of Indian origin Nisha Pahuja, is among the 15 preselected films.
Chosen to represent Canada in the Best Foreign Language Film category, Rojek, by Montreal director of Kurdish origin Zaynê Akyol, was unfortunately excluded.
Finally, let us mention that several Quebec artisans were preselected in the Makeup and Hairstyling category for Beau Is Afraid, a feature film by Ari Aster (Midsommar) shot in Montreal.
Among the 15 international feature films still in the running are The Passion of Dodin Bouffant by Trần Anh Hùng (France), Dead Leaves by Aki Kaurismäki (Finland), Godland by Hylnur Palmason (Iceland), The Zone of Interest by Jonathan Glazer (United Kingdom), Me, Captain by Matteo Garrone (Italy), Perfect Days by Wim Wenders (Japan). 20 Days in Mariupol, by Mstyslav Tchernov, still represents Ukraine in this category, but also in the documentary category.
As expected, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and Martin Scorsese’s The American Note were well represented among the finalists in many categories, including music and sound.
Oppenheimer, however, was not among the top 10 finalists for visual effects. The film’s surprising omission from the “longlist” of 20 finalists was previously reported.
For the most part, “short lists” are determined by members in their respective categories, although the details vary: some have selection committees, others have minimum viewing requirements.
Final nominations in all categories will be announced on January 23.
The 96th Academy Awards will take place on March 10.
