A war between humanity and artificial intelligence is the backstory of the new movie from the director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Godzilla. The trailer promises violent fights between men and robots whose intensity is amplified by the compositions of Hans Zimmer. At the heart of the story is the unlikely relationship between the characters of John David Washington (Tenet, BlacKkKlansman) and young Madeleine Yuna Voyles. This one embodies a former special forces soldier whose mission is to eliminate the Creator and his ultimate weapon: an android with the appearance of a child played by the actress in her first role. Gemma Chan, Allison Janney and Ken Watanabe also star in The Creator, co-written by Gareth Edwards and Chris Weitz.
Sequel to Captain Marvel, the 33rd feature film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) brings together three superheroines: Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan. The latter, played by Canadian Iman Vellani, is the focus of the Ms. Marvel series. Teyonah Parris reprises her role from the WandaVision series in which we met Monica Rambeau as an adult, as Brie Larson once again dons the mighty Captain Marvel costume. The trio are brought together by an unfortunate situation that has the effect of physically swapping places each time they use their powers. Additionally, Kree warrior Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) threatens to destroy every planet they hold dear. In addition to directing the film, Nia DaCosta (Little Woods, Candyman) is co-writing the screenplay with two other women, Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik.
The series The Hunger Games goes back in time for this fifth installment which takes place some sixty years before the events of the first film. Coriolanus Snow, played by Donald Sutherland, is not yet the tyrannical president of Panem, but a young man, played by Tom Blyth (the Billy the Kid series), who tries to restore the image of his line. He is appointed mentor to District 12 and Lucy Gray Baird, played by Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), for the tenth Hunger Games. To mark their 100th anniversary, Walt Disney Animation Studios is coming up with an original story that pays homage to the past in a variety of ways. While Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore’s script borrows from classic works, the animation mixes old-school watercolor techniques with new technology. Wish tells the story of Asha (Ariana DeBose), who lives in the Kingdom of Rosas, where King Magnifico (Chris Pine) can grant wishes. The young woman, who feels that her sovereign is not entirely benevolent, launches an appeal to the stars. When Star descends from the sky, her magic and her spontaneity change many things in the kingdom and, among other things, give voice to certain animals. Julia Michaels, who has written hits for Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, is composing the songs for the film.
The prolific director of Gladiator and The Last Duel once again tells a story from our past, that of Napoleon Bonaparte, a soldier who became the first French emperor in 1804. Joaquin Phoenix (Joker, Her) slips into the skin of the man born in Ajaccio, while Vanessa Kirby (the two most recent Mission: Impossible, Pieces of a Woman) plays Joséphine de Beauharnais, his first wife. No less than six great battles, including that of Waterloo, are produced by Apple Studios and Sony Pictures. The screenplay is by David Scarpa, who wrote All the Money in the World directed by Ridley Scott, and the 2024 sequel to Gladiator, which the 85-year-old filmmaker had started filming before the SAG-AFTRA strike broke out.
Created by author Roald Dahl, the character of Willy Wonka came to life in the cinema first as Gene Wilder in 1971, then as Johnny Depp in 2005. It was the turn of Timothée Chalamet (Dune , Call Me by Your Name) to play the eccentric chocolatier, but this time it will be to tell how he started his journey in the candy industry. Paul King, who directed the two Paddingtons, teamed up again with Simon Farnaby, with whom he had written the second film of the adventures of the little bear in the blue raincoat. Production has also been slowed down by various factors, including the pandemic and all that. surrounding the Depp-Heard trial – Amber Heard played Mera in the first film and is set to reprise her role in the sequel. The trailer is still overdue, so it’s unclear what James Wan (Saw, Furious 7) and screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who worked together on the original, have cooked up. Illumination, animation studio behind the hugely successful The Super Mario Bros. The group of five’s odyssey to Jamaica will, however, pass through the dangerous city of New York. This is the first American film by Frenchman Benjamin Renner, who was nominated for the Oscars in 2014 for Ernest and Celestine. He is joined by Guylo Homsy, who worked on the first two Despicable Me. Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Awkwafina and Danny DeVito lend their voices to some of the animated birds. The music is by John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon, Rio).
With the DCEU behind him, Zack Snyder will launch with Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire the first chapter of a new world he’s built with screenwriters Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten. The central character in her story is Kora (Sofia Boutella), a former warrior who must defend her quiet village from the forces of the Imperium. Ed Skrein, who plays the leader of the corrupt government army in Mother World, told Den of Geek in an interview that Zack Snyder introduced him to his movie, saying it’s “like Star Wars, but with violence, sex and swearing”. Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Hopkins and Charlie Hunnam also star. This Netflix production will also be shown in a few theaters. The sequel, The Scargiver, will launch on April 19, 2024.
In competition at the Venice Film Festival, Michael Mann’s first film since 2015’s Blackhat is based on the book Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine by Brock Yates. Adam Driver (House of Gucci, Marriage Story) plays the famous Scuderia founder. Screenwriter Troy Kennedy Martin set his story in 1957, when the company Enzo and his wife Laura (Penélope Cruz) built was on the verge of bankruptcy. The couple’s marriage is also rocked by the death of their first son, Alfredo. Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gadon and Gabriel Leone are also cast. “Based on the operatic and melodramatic side of this episode from the view of Enzo Ferrari by his own admission, Michael Mann has staged a tense and gripping narrative,” wrote our colleague Marc Cassivi, who has seen the film THURSDAY.
