His love affair with the Quebec metropolis began while he was studying at the National Theater School of Canada, rue Saint-Denis, at the turn of the 1980s. Henry Czerny returned there a few times during his career, recently for filming Scream VI and The Venery of Samantha Bird. The writers’ strike, however, interrupted the latter.
“I like the joie de vivre of Montreal [he said the expression in French], which is very different from the rest of Canada. I love the architecture, the flavor, the history… lists the 64-year-old actor. The last time I was there was during the second half of winter and the beginning of spring. Regardless of the period, it is a wonderful time to be in Montreal. And I love food, of course! »
The theme of gastronomy will recur throughout our interview. Henry Czerny also believes that the experience of going to the cinema is similar to that of eating in a good restaurant. “I want to convince people to see the film the way they would eat a meal from L’Express [in Montreal] or Lucas Carton [in Paris]. »
Henry Czerny even compares director and co-writer Christopher McQuarie and Tom Cruise to “three Michelin star chefs”. “They do whatever it takes to make the 2 hours 43 minutes they offer you feel like a five-course, multi-tasting meal you’ll never forget.” »
In 1996, Henry Czerny had no idea that Mission: Impossible would become an ambitious blockbuster series that would try to outdo itself with every installment. He still remembers very well the filming of the famous scene in a restaurant in Prague which ends with the explosion of a gigantic aquarium.
“Working with Tom on that scene is my most memorable memory from the first movie,” he says. It is quite long, especially for Kittridge, who divulges a lot of information. I remember trying to stay in the present moment. What is fabulous about being in front of Tom is that he is so focused that all I had to do was look at him and answer him. »
Henry Czerny watched all of the sequels with interest, but wasn’t looking forward to the phone call to reprise his role as Eugene Kittridge, director of the original chapter’s Impossible Mission Force (IMF). However, he was not asked to be asked to return, 27 years after the first installment of the series.
“I’m very happy to have been given the opportunity to reprise the role,” the actor said. The younger Kittridge thought he knew a lot, but he obviously didn’t. Since being fooled [schooled] by Ethan Hunt, he’s worked in different positions at various agencies in order to learn how this whole system works. In this seventh film, Kittridge is wiser, more serious, but somehow sadder. I loved playing it that way. »
It is not said in Dead Reckoning Part One whether Kittridge and Hunt have crossed paths often since Prague, but the Toronto-born actor does indicate that the relationship between the two has evolved. “Kittridge has partly resigned himself to Ethan’s ways. He recognizes that he is an exceptional part of the IMF, but has difficulty accepting all the power he possesses and allows himself. According to him, his abilities and his honesty do not give him all the rights. »
