(Los Angeles) Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 rocketed to the top of the North American box office by amassing a staggering $114 million in its first weekend, according to industry firm Exhibitor Relations.
This estimate, although lower than the release weekend of another Marvel, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (187 million), remains “excellent for a Marvel sequel”, according to analyst David A. Gross.
The film which tells the story of intergalactic mercenaries stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel.
The Guardians thus dethrone The Super Mario Bros. Movie, inspired by the game of the same name, which rose to second place with $18.6 million.
Third, the horror film Evil Dead Rise (5.7 million) stars actresses Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland as two sisters who must battle a slew of demonic creatures.
In fourth place with $3.4 million is Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret, comedy-drama about adolescence, adapted from a children’s literature classic by author Judy Blume.
And fifth, the romantic comedy Love Again, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan, which raised 2.4 million dollars.
