The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has expanded its voter base by recruiting 128 more journalists. More than 300 members will now choose the nominees and winners of the Golden Globes.
This announcement comes as the HFPA has faced criticism for several years due to the lack of diversity among its members, in particular. In 2021, the Los Angeles Times reported that no member of the organization was black, prompting a boycott of major Hollywood ad firms.
Last year, 103 new journalists were recruited, of which 87 will return to vote for the 2024 Golden Globes.
Of the 310 members who will vote for the next ceremony, “25% [are of Latin descent], 14% Asian, 10% Black, 9% Middle Eastern and 42% White,” according to the HFPA press release. “At least 17% of voters identify as LGBTQIA,” it adds.
The members of the HFPA, now representing 76 countries, are specialist journalists whose mandate is to determine the most deserving artists and craftsmen in the world of cinema each year.
