Rewe has now officially confirmed that the partnership with Payback will end at the end of 2024. Instead, the supermarket wants to offer its own bonus program.
Payback is about to end at Rewe and the associated discounter subsidiary Penny. As the “Lebensmittel Zeitung” writes, the supermarket has now officially confirmed the separation. Accordingly, the contract was extended by another two years, and the partnership will finally expire at the end of 2024.
The background is as follows: Payback earns its money with the collected user data. Rewe also wants access to this data. However, Payback requires a lot of money for this. There is talk of up to 150 million euros.
Rewe therefore now wants to collect the data itself. To this end, the supermarket chain is planning to introduce its own bonus system from January 1, 2025. “After the contract expires, the Rewe Group would go its own way,” a spokeswoman told the LZ.
For Payback, the canceled cooperation is a severe setback. A total of 17 million of the 31 million Payback cards in Germany were issued by Rewe or Penny. The 150 million euros that Rewe reportedly pays to Payback every year will also no longer apply from 2025.
