Prince Harry does not hold back with criticism and allegations in his memoirs. In the BUNTE.de interview, a psychologist classifies what this behavior could be about.
Prince Harry’s memoir “Spare” hit like a bomb. The royal shares very intimate moments from his past. Among other things, he talks about the tragic loss of his mother, about his two children and also about his love story with Duchess Meghan.
But in addition to the private insights into his inner life, “Spare” has one thing to offer in particular: harsh criticism and severe allegations. Especially King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Princess Kate get their fat off. What is striking, however, is that Harry apparently blames those around him – and of course the British press too – not only for their behavior but also for his own. But how is it that Harry often seems to blame others?
A constant accusation from Harry: The British press takes his words out of context and twists his statements. He had also been upset about this in the various TV interviews that he had conducted for promotional purposes in the past few days. For example, in an interview with Stephen Colbert, he claims that he never bragged about killing 25 people in Afghanistan. This statement by the press puts him and his family in danger, the 38-year-old complains. And even if the term “show off” may be an exaggeration, Harry describes his Afghanistan mission in his book quite hardened at times. For example, he describes the enemy fighters he killed as “chess pieces that fell off the board”. . In addition, military experts have criticized that the mere fact that Harry discloses such “sensitive” information poses a major security risk.
Another surprising point: In the famous interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan and Harry clearly accused the royal family of racism, among other things. In a new interview, Harry doesn’t want to know anything more about it. Instead, he again claims that the British press took his quotes out of context. After all, there is a difference between racism and “unconscious bias”.
Harry sees the reason for the many negative headlines not only in the press himself. In his memoirs, he also describes, for example, how his now notorious Nazi costume came about, for which the then 20-year-old was heavily criticized . However, according to him, it was William, 40, and Kate, 41, who encouraged him to choose such a tasteless costume.
But how is it that Harry often seems to seek the blame elsewhere? BUNTE.de spoke to the psychologist Sebastian Bartoschek about Harry: “With Harry over the last few years you can see an increasing tendency towards externalization, i.e. the assignment of blame for behavior to third parties. There is also a tendency, I think, to what is called groupthink. Groupthink means that if I increasingly surround myself with the same people, I will find a unified narrative and set myself apart from others. From my point of view, this marital connection with Meghan was actually a trigger and then again the move to the USA. You can already see that there is a growing escalation, with a view to negative attributions regarding the royal family.”
With the allegations of racism against the Windsors, Harry and Meghan “found a grateful audience” in the USA. “In my opinion, this also has to do with the fact that Harry, when the situation was different, had a very exposed and good position in the royal family as the Queen’s favorite grandson and since then he increasingly fell out of favor and he now in front of himself have to justify why am i where i am. And people generally tend to blame others for something like this. If you then – and this is what I mean by groupthink – assume that he has an environment that will certainly support his point of view, then this process is reinforced again.”
Sebastian Bartoschek has the impression that Harry and Meghan are increasingly positioning themselves against the Royals from an American perspective. “He also needs that to some extent for ultimate emancipation. […] I don’t think Harry is lying, in the sense of deliberately spreading untruths, but I do think that the whole thing may be coming to a head in his memory,” the expert is certain.
Prince Harry testified in his autobiography that he killed 25 people in Afghanistan – which drew many critics to the scene. Now he justified himself in a US talk show for these statements.
