After the New Year’s Eve riots, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) calls for police protection for certain rescue operations and for the police to be equipped with body cameras across the board.
“As long as these problems exist, I think police protection for rescue workers makes sense in particularly dangerous operations,” said Faeser of “Bild am Sonntag” (Bams). And further: “Safety must be the top priority. I am in favor of the use of bodycams for all police officers in Germany, in certain areas also for rescue services or firefighters. These cameras increase the reluctance of rioters to attack the police.”
In the interview, Faser made it clear that people with a migration background in Germany are also suffering from the riots. We have to protect them twice, says Faeser. “Against violent criminals and a general suspicion.”
In the interview, the interior minister also defended her draft law for stricter gun laws. Accordingly, in the future you will need a gun license for a crossbow – which is popular with Reich citizens, for example.
Semi-automatic assault rifles and other weapons similar to weapons of war are to be banned. “We have to be even more consistent in removing weapons from extremists. Weapons authorities, the police and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution must exchange ideas even more closely. In the future, we will also involve the health authorities so that people who are mentally ill and who pose a threat do not own weapons,” said Faeser in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”.
