On Thursday morning, the former Vice-President of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili, testified before the Belgian authorities. In a few hours, a Belgian judge will then decide whether Kaili will be released or remain in custody.
In the EU corruption scandal, the Belgian judiciary will decide on Thursday afternoon whether the former Vice President of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili, should remain in prison. According to Greek media, the former EU Parliament Vice President has now testified to the Belgian authorities. At the end of her hearing, a judge would then decide whether Kaili should remain in custody or be released.
Last week, the detention review was postponed at short notice at the request of the 44-year-old Greek. The Belgian judiciary is investigating suspected corruption, money laundering and influence from abroad in the vicinity of the EU Parliament.
Before the judges in Brussels, Eva Kaili’s lawyers argued that she was innocent, was bribed and would cooperate with the authorities. They demanded their release under certain conditions.
Her lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulos said on ANT1’s morning TV: “I saw a woman in prison who was broken. She misses her two-year-old daughter.” Eva Kaili told him: “In the end, the truth will come out and win.” The night before he had told Open TV: “Health is the most important asset, but for some it is Freedom. Ms. Eva Kaili is deeply affected, she feels betrayed by her partner.”
