October and early November were unusually warm. The thermometer showed an average of three degrees more than in the last four years. The late summer temperatures also had an impact on gas consumption in Germany, which was comparatively low.
When the t-shirt weather ended in mid-November, however, consumption rose again noticeably. This emerges from the current situation report of the Federal Network Agency from November 29th. In the 45th calendar week, 28 percent more gas was used than in the previous week. Contrary to what the clear increase suggests, the consumption is quite normal in relation. Adjusted for temperature, this was even 29.1 percent below the reference value of the past four years.
The status of the gas storage facilities in this country also offers no reason to panic at the moment. The total storage status in this country is 98.99 percent. Germany’s largest natural gas storage facility in Rehden, which has a capacity of 3.9 billion cubic meters, is now 92.81 percent full.

At the same time, however, the Federal Network Agency warned that consumers and companies would have to “continue to adjust to a significantly higher price level” due to strongly fluctuating and recently rising wholesale prices. The authority, which has been pointing to such an aggravation since June, also warned of a possible deterioration in the situation. The situation remains “tense”. Nevertheless, the security of supply is currently guaranteed and the gas supply is stable.
To keep it that way, the Federal Network Agency continues to recommend saving gas. In order to avert a gas shortage, 20 percent more gas would have to be saved than in previous years. In addition, the new liquid gas terminals should start feeding in gas at the beginning of the year. Ultimately, gas exports from Germany should not increase significantly, and at the same time Berlin should not import less gas.
With an electricity price brake the federal government wants to cushion the consequences of higher prices. In order to help finance this, surplus proceeds “due to the war and the crisis” are to be skimmed off. But a new report now suggests that this plan could be illegal.
