The Federal Ministry of the Interior is currently planning a naturalization reform. In the coalition agreement, the traffic light has already stipulated that migration, participation and nationality law in Germany should be revised. First, the “Bild” newspaper reported on the planned reform of naturalization. The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” also has the 39-page “draft of a law to modernize nationality law”.

The reform is still at an early stage. According to information from government circles, the reform proposal is currently before the Chancellery. Coordination between the ministries should begin next week.
Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) has welcomed the government’s planned reform of citizenship law to make naturalization easier. “I think that’s only logical,” he told the editorial network Germany (RND) on Friday. “People who live here for a certain number of years, do not commit crimes, earn a living and have regular residence status should be naturalized earlier in the interests of integration and participation. Thuringia’s Interior Minister Georg Maier (also SPD) told the RND: “If you see how people are happy about their naturalization, then you can also see that this is a very important part of integration.”
