It was a computer error that affected hundreds of travelers. Eurowings accidentally sold the seats for four flights from Palma de Mallorca to Germany last Thursday twice, as first reported by the “Mallorca Zeitung”.
The reason is an “IT error in the interface of the booking system,” according to a spokesman for the Lufthansa subsidiary. The bug has been fixed and will not happen again.
However, there was not room for around 600 passengers directly on board the Eurowings flights to Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Frankfurt and Hamburg.
The airline had to find a replacement and did so in the form of two of its own aircraft, a jet from a wet lease partner and a plane rented from holiday flight competitor Condor.
“Passports were then randomly checked, from time to time someone started to cheer and had apparently been able to get a free seat,” one of those affected described her impressions to “Mallorca Magazin”. “It was kind of like a lottery.”
According to Eurowings, around 80 percent of travelers came to Germany on Thursday evening. 20 percent had to stay in the hotel and fly the next morning.
In addition, the flight to Hamburg could not land there due to the night flight ban. Instead, we went to Hanover and from there by bus to Hamburg.
