Since the middle of 2018, a city perinatal consultation has been held in Moscow. Doctors of various specialties consult pregnant women in cases of detection of chromosomal abnormalities and serious malformations in the unborn child. During this time, specialists have held more than 700 consultations, said Sergey Martirosyan, Chief freelance obstetrics specialist of the Moscow Department of Health, Deputy Chief Physician for Obstetric and Gynecological Care, head of the perinatal center of the L.A. Vorokhobov City Clinical Hospital No. 67.
He stressed that it is important for parents not only to be aware of all the risks associated with the health of the unborn child, but also to understand what medical opportunities exist. Thanks to professional and high-tech assistance provided in Moscow hospitals, the impact of malformations on the baby’s life can be minimized.
Now the consultations are held on the basis of the perinatal centers of the Moscow Multidisciplinary Clinical Center “Kommunarka” and the city Clinical Hospital No. 67 named after L.A. Vorokhobov. The council consists of leading doctors: ultrasound specialists, pediatric surgeons, obstetricians and gynecologists, neonatologists and specialists in the profile of the identified malformation. Consultations can be received by patients of all specialized organizations of the Moscow Department of Health.
According to the results of the city perinatal consultation, families are provided with information about the results of examinations, the prognosis for the life and health of the unborn child, treatment methods, the risk associated with them, possible options for medical intervention (including intrauterine surgical correction), their consequences and the results of the treatment. Based on these data, the family decides whether to carry or terminate the pregnancy.
The presence of pathology in the unborn child, as a rule, causes anxiety and stress in parents, therefore, a psychologist works with the family during the consultation. It helps to relieve anxiety, assess the situation, weigh the pros and cons and make a choice between prolongation and termination of pregnancy.
Having received comprehensive consultations from various specialists about the prognosis for the life and health of the unborn child, parents in some cases decide to keep the pregnancy. Then the task of the consultation is to provide information on the tactics of its management, recommend a specific obstetric hospital for delivery and form the tactics of treatment of the child.
If necessary, a consultation with the family is conducted by a geneticist who assesses the causes of developmental abnormalities and the risks of their recurrence in subsequent pregnancies.
