UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has reportedly had to reassign Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s post. Braverman is stepping down after just 43 days in office.

Unnamed Home Office sources confirmed to the British PA news agency on Wednesday afternoon that the minister was leaving government, after the Guardian had previously reported.

There has been speculation that former Transport Secretary Grant Shapps could become Home Secretary. Braverman belonged to the extreme right wing of the party and has repeatedly made a name for herself with statements about her plans for tougher action on deportations. She recently railed against “tofu-eating” leftists in parliament.

It would be the second change in an important department within six days. Only on Friday did Truss fire her finance minister, Kwasi Kwarteng, and replace her with former foreign minister Jeremy Hunt. The conservative head of government is fighting for office after she triggered financial chaos with planned tax breaks and had to turn around.
