The Corona wave in Bavaria continues to roll and increases the numbers. A good week after the end of the Oktoberfest, the situation in and around Munich is tense. The fire letter from a clinic works council shows just how much.
The corona numbers in Bavaria are increasing and putting more and more pressure on the hospitals. According to figures from the Robert Koch Institute, the official incidence in Bavaria exceeded the 1000 threshold on Tuesday morning. Specifically, it jumped to 1096.8. That’s up 286.3 from Monday.
And more and more people with Corona are also coming to the hospitals. According to the State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL), there were 2505 within seven days. That’s an all-time high and a rise of more than 160 percent in a week.
Although many patients come to the hospitals with them and not because of Corona, the record value gives an impression of how widespread the virus is at the moment. Even at the height of earlier waves, maximum values of around 1500 had been reached.
The official incidence now only provides a very incomplete picture of the number of infections. Experts assume a high number of cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. In addition, weekends and public holidays can lead to shifts and distortions in the statistics. Last week’s public holiday, for example, is likely to push the numbers up a bit at the moment.
What the current figures mean for the hospitals is illustrated by a fire letter from the works council of the Munich clinic, quoted by the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. “The situation is serious and it will get worse,” says the letter, which is addressed to Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD), among others. “The emergency centers are overcrowded, the patients are piling up in the corridors.” The safety of patients and employees is “no longer guaranteed, the risk is real and provable”.
The Munich Clinic states that intensive care and emergency care in Munich is “still largely guaranteed, but under great pressure”. This is at the expense of the employees. There is also an increasing number of corona-related staff shortages. If the situation continues to deteriorate, there are a number of measures to pool staff for more urgent supplies. This also included “temporary department closures or mergers”.

In and around Munich, the numbers rose sharply during and after the Oktoberfest, which ended just over a week ago. In the city, the incidence is 1497.4, the neighboring district of Fürstenfeldbruck leads the Bavarian list with 1840.1. The Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) confirmed on Tuesday that from his point of view the Oktoberfest was a success overall. It was clear that the numbers would go up after that. “We have to see how things continue there now.”
Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU) called on citizens across Bavaria to be cautious in view of the increasing number of corona cases and the increasing utilization of hospitals. “As predicted by the experts, the autumn wave started with momentum. That is why citizens should continue to follow the proven protection rules in the coming months. Keep your distance, wash your hands, wear a mask, ventilate – these are simple ways to keep corona viruses and flu viruses at bay.”
The numbers are also increasing nationwide. The RKI gave the nationwide seven-day incidence on Tuesday morning as 787.5. The previous day the value was 598.1, in the previous week it was 374.0, in the previous month it was 220.9. And here, too, experts assume a high number of unreported cases. The actual number of new corona infections is therefore likely to be even higher. !function(){var t=window.addEventListener?”addEventListener”:”attachEvent”;(0,window[t])(“attachEvent”==t?”onmessage”:”message”,function(t){if (“string”==typeof t.data
