The deadly situation in Iran never ends. More than 130 people have been killed by police during the protests, Iran Human Rights Watch reports. Now two youths aged 16 and 17 are said to have been killed by Iranian officials.
The victims: Sarina Esmailzadeh (16) and Nika Shakarami (17). 16-year-old YouTuber Sarina Esmailzadeh died after security forces hit her in the head with batons, according to Amnesty International. Her death was not reported until authorities released the body. Her family had previously searched for her for ten days.
Nika Shakarami also suddenly disappeared during a protest rally in the capital, Tehran, on September 20. She has since been missed by her family. Her loved ones were looking for her in prisons, hospitals and even morgues, The Sun writes.
Atesh Shakarami, Nika’s aunt, told BBC Farsi she left the house with a bottle of water and a towel. Both served to ward off tear gas, it turned out later. Shortly before her death, she is said to have phoned a friend. She said she was “on the run from security officials”.
After days of searching, the sad certainty came: The girl could be identified in a morgue. Her skull was fractured and her nose was smashed. The official cause of death was a fall from a height, but family members don’t believe it. The reason: photos should show her body lying on the asphalt. It is said that her water bottle and cell phone were only placed next to it for the photo.
In view of the brutal action taken by Iranian security forces against anti-government demonstrators, US President Joe Biden has announced sanctions against those responsible. Later this week, the US government will announce punitive measures against those who use violence against peaceful demonstrators, Biden announced in a written statement on Monday (local time).
“We will continue to hold Iranian officials accountable and support Iranians’ right to protest freely.” Biden said he was “very concerned” by reports of escalating violence against peaceful protesters in Iran.
