My life has many facets, I live different roles. I’m a manager, networker, strategist, friend and wife. A new role has been added for 2.5 years: that of the mother. In many eyes that of the raven mother.

Ever since my girls were born, there have been constant assumptions: twins, a husband with a management position and their own professional and shared private commitments – that doesn’t fit under any hat, no matter how big. Funny how my husband is never asked how he manages all this. And it fits: automatisms, rituals, organization and a lot of love. That’s all – and free yourself from the thought of having to reconcile everything. It fits anyway.

For my mother comrades, our life throws big question marks on their foreheads. What others think of me is the rating, what I think of myself is my reality. I am a realist.

In order to establish oneself in the club of the bad mothers and to make a name for oneself, a sophisticated recipe is required. Here are my four ingredients:

My recipe suits me. My life suits me because I set it up that way. It was always my plan. That doesn’t mean that I invented the panacea for everyone: Every woman with children and a job is the architect of her life, the queen of her castle and the ruler of space and time. A plan, a concept or the recipe is just as individual as we, every single woman.

I’m proud to be a raving mother. Not because this is used as a swear word, not because other mothers try to relativize their own social position by pointing the finger or even pass on to others the frustration of mothers from shattered career dreams, NO, I am proud of it, because working fathers are called MEN, and working ones Women just RAVENMOTHERS. I’m also proud of it, because like many others of my kind, I’m allowed and able to practice my profession. We live digitally, are networked and have a social environment that does not end at the dead end in the suburbs.

I’m proud to be a raving mother because I’m in the very best of company. All these great, intelligent and charming women, with or without a steady partner, but with children, these women stand with both feet in high heels, Uggs, sneakers and sometimes barefoot in professional life and at the same time master children and private life.

We are the modern humans, we live locally and work globally, we are the prototypes of the here and now society. i am dr Susan Niemeyer – and I’m a raving mother.
