The tank discount actually ends on August 31st. Because the demand for fuel is currently increasing, the gas stations are now raising prices. The ADAC once again recorded a sharp price increase in the national average at the weekend. FOCUS online says how drivers should react now.

As reported by the ADAC, a liter of premium E10 petrol cost almost 1.80 euros on Sunday on average across Germany. For diesel, the gas station operators demanded an average of 2.07 euros.

At the beginning of August, drivers were still paying EUR 1.71 per liter for the E10 variety. Diesel, in turn, cost 1.91 euros per liter. In comparison, this is a price increase of 9 cents for the E10 variety and almost 16 cents for diesel.

The price increase in southern Germany is even more severe. Here, drivers already pay 2.20 euros for a liter of diesel and over 1.80 euros for a liter of Super. At 1.77 euros, E10 remains the cheapest variety at the gas station.

Those who fill up are currently paying a particularly large amount of money at rest stops and motorway service stations. Here you can get a liter of diesel for over 2.40 euros per liter and super for over 2 euros per liter.

In the night from August 31 to September 1, a temporary reduction in energy tax to the minimum level specified by the EU ends. It has been valid since June 1 together with the 9-euro ticket to relieve consumers in the face of high energy prices.

When the measure expires, refueling could become significantly more expensive again – arithmetically by around 35 cents per liter of petrol and 17 cents per liter of diesel.

Everything is possible.

Although petrol station operators are still shopping with a reduced tax rate in August, the price at the petrol pumps could also increase after August 31st.

The Economic Association for Fuels and Energy (En2X) expects that these will only be small quantities that can be offered at a reduced price.

“Many drivers will probably be going to the gas stations more often in these days to fill up their cars again,” said the association’s managing director Adrian Willig.

In principle, you should not run your tank dry over the next few days. If you drive a lot, fill up the tank, if you only need your vehicle occasionally until mid-June, fill up so that you don’t have to go to the gas station for the next few days.

The ADAC also advises this. “There will be more going on at the gas stations at the beginning of the tank discount,” says the press office. “That drives prices up.”

Compare fuel prices in your area. Apps that you install on your smartphone can help. Well-known providers are ADAC, Mehr Tanken, Clever Tanken or Bertha. Google Maps also lists the current fuel prices for many German cities.

As a rule, drive in the evening between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. to fill up. Especially on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday you can save a lot of money at the pump. It is most expensive at the German petrol pumps on the weekends. Gas station operators also call for high fuel prices in the morning and at night.

If you have to travel long distances, avoid motorway service stations and use exits into surrounding small towns. Ideally, this will result in savings of up to 8 cents per liter.
