August 5th is World Beer Day. The editorial staff of Comparison.org took this as an opportunity to use online searches to find out which varieties are most popular with Germans.
Top-fermented Kölsch is in first place with a total of 35,240 searches per month. The beer is considered a symbol of the city of Cologne and is traditionally served in small glasses, the so-called Kölsch bars. Because of the low CO2 content, it quickly becomes stale in larger glasses.
In second place is the trend drink craft beer with 27,820 monthly searches. Strictly speaking, this is not a type of beer at all, but the way it is made in small, independent breweries. The craft beer is characterized by a variety of different brewing methods.
