The shortage of skilled workers here in Germany has become a major problem. The FDP now wants to attract more workers from abroad to Germany. When recruiting foreign skilled workers, the party relies above all on an “export hit”.

Almost every second company in Germany is plagued by a shortage of skilled workers. This is reported by the Ifo Institute. Especially in the catering and events sector, the companies simply lack employees.

Voices are now getting louder from the FDP to look more abroad for skilled workers. The financial policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group, Markus Herbrand, is now calling for foreign workers to be lured primarily with German pensions, reports “Welt”.

“In times of an acute shortage of skilled workers and the sometimes desperate search for staff, we should emphasize our export hit pension even more confidently when trying to recruit,” he told the newspaper. Not only “reasonable wage payments, but also the minimum possible basic security in old age” would distinguish Germany as an attractive place to work, the FDP man continued.

The number of pensions paid abroad has risen by 37 percent over the past 20 years, according to figures from the German pension insurance. This means that many of the workers from abroad have moved back to their home country because their German pension is worth more there. Experts confirm that you have more purchasing power – another argument for the attractiveness of German pensions.

With a view to the recruitment attempts of other countries and companies that are in competition with German companies, Herbrand demanded: “We have to weigh these lucrative wages and stable living conditions in our country more in order to compete for the required ‘manpower’ against to enforce other countries and markets”.

The proportion of foreign employees in local companies has more than doubled since 2010. Especially in the electronics sector or in the natural sciences, companies can no longer survive without foreign help. Many experts therefore urgently need political levers to attract more skilled workers to Germany.
