Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus has spoken out in favor of increasing child benefits as a result of inflation. She considers higher child benefits to be a suitable means of relieving poorer families in times of rising prices.
“In addition to increasing the Hartz IV standard rates, this would be a way to support these families in a targeted manner,” Paus told the news portal t-online. When asked whether child benefit would increase in view of inflation, the Green politician said: “It will probably come down to that.”
The long-term goal of the traffic light coalition is to introduce basic child security and thus to bundle the previous financial support services for children from the state. The working group set up to work out the complex topic with experts from the Ministry for Family Affairs and the Federal Ministries for Finance, Justice, Labour, Education and Housing is working “intensively” on it, said Paus and reiterated their goal that basic child security will be paid out from 2025. “In the short term, we will primarily be talking about adjusting child benefits,” Paus added.
Referring to the subsistence level report that will be published in the autumn, the minister recently told the “Handelsblatt” that she assumed that the traffic light coalition would then “necessarily discuss tax allowances, an increase in child benefit and higher standard rates”.
