NBA superstar LeBron James speaks out in the case of basketball player Brittney Griner jailed in Moscow. According to him, the United States could do more to bring the athlete home.
Basketball star Brittney Griner was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after Russian customs officials found hash oil in her luggage in February this year.
Since then, the US athlete has been stuck in Russia. Then, last week, Griner pleaded guilty to importing hash oil into Russia; telling the judge that she had done so by mistake and asking for clemency.
If convicted, she now faces up to ten years in prison. However, insiders believe the guilty plea was a strategy to facilitate a prisoner swap.
In the meantime, US basketball star LeBron James has commented on Brittney Griner and the whole situation.
In a segment for The Shop, James says the US isn’t doing enough to ensure Griner is allowed to come home.
“How can she feel like America is behind her? I’d be like, ‘Do I even want to go back to America?’”
After receiving violent reactions to his statement, he later clarified his statements on Twitter:
“My comment about Brittney Griner was not a criticism of our beautiful country. I was just saying how she is probably feeling emotionally along with so many other emotions, thoughts, etc in this cage she has been in for over 100 days! Long story short
