What a drama! German cycling star Lennard Kämna looked like the winner on the first mountain stage. But 100 meters before the finish, he was overtaken by two-time tour winner Tadej Pogacar and the Dane Jonas Vingegaard. Kämna was “only” fourth.
It would have been Kämna’s second tour stage win after winning a day section in 2020. The 25-year-old from the German team Bora Hansgrohe broke away about four kilometers before the top of the mountain at the Planche des Belles Filles and heroically drove alone over the ramps, some of which were more than 20 percent steep.
But the strength wasn’t enough. What a terrific performance – with a bitter end. Kämna’s teammate Maximilian Schachmann had done a great job in the top group of seven in order to pave the way for Kämna.
Kämna’s captain for the general classification, the Russian Alexandr Vlasov, fell early on the way to the mountain finish from the group of tour favorites and lost a lot of time. Two-time tour winner Tadej Pogacar secured his yellow jersey by winning the stage.
