From Saturday, July 16, 2022 to Sunday, September 25, 2022, the city of Nuremberg will close three of the four municipal indoor pools. City Hall announced this in a press release. With this step, “against the background of the looming energy crisis, an initial measure to save energy was implemented”. A few days ago, the city administration told inFranken.de that they were examining “a list of feasible savings measures”. There are “no taboos”.

From Monday 5 September 2022 to Sunday 25 September 2022
The bathing season in the three Nuremberg outdoor pools, Westbad, Wiesentalstraße 41, Stadionbad, Hans-Kalb-Straße 42, and Naturgartenbad, Schlegelstraße 20, will be extended up to and including Sunday, September 25, 2022. Schools, clubs and other partners of the responsible company NürnbergBad were informed about the closure. If possible, you would be offered alternative water areas, for example in the outdoor pools.
“The energy crisis caused by the Ukraine war calls for significant austerity measures. We have to prepare in good time for possible restrictions on the gas supply,” Nuremberg Mayor Marcus König (CSU) is quoted as saying. According to the city, the pool closure for 72 days frees up thermal energy for 383 households or around 1,500 people and electricity for 789 households or 3,100 people in Nuremberg.
The outdoor pools are also currently running without additional pool heating. That is a total energy saving of 1.3 gigawatt hours. “The situation is serious and I have decided, in consultation with my colleagues from the city leadership, to take this step,” said Mayor Christian Vogel (SPD).
“One thing is clear: we have to save energy. Unfortunately, it is also clear that a noticeable saving does not come without cuts and possible inconveniences. Otherwise we would have taken the step long ago. We know that we are asking a lot of the citizens and we hope they will understand our step,” Vogel continued. He demands flexibility from the people in Nuremberg.
“But I’m also sure that people recognize the need for the measure and are flexible and, for example, go to the Westbad instead of the outdoor pool in the Nordostbad.” However, “seahorse courses” would continue to be held, explains sports officer Cornelia Trinkl (CSU). The offers could also be maintained in the competitive sports area, she explains in conclusion about the surprising Nuremberg swimming pool closure.
