The controversial mayor of Frankfurt am Main, Peter Feldmann (SPD), has announced his resignation. He will apply in January to end his term of office at the end of the month, Feldmann wrote in a statement distributed on Tuesday.

“I would like to spare the city of Frankfurt an agonizing and expensive vote-out procedure – and take the opportunity to bring my official business to a proper conclusion after more than ten years.”

Most recently, the Frankfurt City Council had increased the pressure on Feldmann almost a month ago and called for his resignation with a large majority. Otherwise, a vote-out procedure should be initiated against him at the July 14 meeting. The city councilors demanded Feldmann’s immediate resignation – it is still unclear whether they will refrain from the voting procedure after the resignation announcement for January.

In April 2022, Feldmann declared that he did not want to stand again in the upcoming 2024 election. Feldmann has held his office since 2012. The starting point for the long-standing criticism of Feldmann was a corruption scandal at the Arbeiterwohlfahrt, in which the public prosecutor filed charges against the politician in March.

In addition, Feldmann came under pressure because of sexist statements on a flight to the Europa League final from Eintracht Frankfurt to Seville. There was also criticism of his behavior, which he rated as complacent, when he received the Frankfurt team after their success.
