“The statements made by the Environment Minister about the end of combustion engines are surprising. They do not correspond to the agreements. Combustion engines with CO2-free fuels should also be possible as a technology in all vehicles after 2035. Our approval is bound to that,” Lindner wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
Neither Lemke nor Habeck in Luxembourg announced an unqualified approval of the end of combustion engines from 2035. Lemke told the broadcaster RBB that although she would vote for an end to combustion engines from 2035, she would advocate an exception, for example for airplanes and fire engines. According to Lemke, these vehicles should continue to be able to run on synthetic fuels (e-fuels).
The coalition partner FDP had insisted that technologies such as e-fuels should not be ruled out. The combustion engine off had triggered a controversy within the traffic light coalition. The Greens and SPD were in favor of banning internal combustion engines from 2035, while the FDP was against it.
The European Commission’s proposal on exhaust emissions is part of the climate package with which the EU intends to reduce its CO2 emissions by 55 percent by 2030.
Lemke assumed before the meeting that it would be “really difficult negotiations”. The Environment Council also advises on other parts of the climate package, including deforestation-free supply chains and the establishment of a climate social fund to relieve low-income households.
