Not quite two thirds of Germans are in favor of a longer term for the nuclear power plants that are still connected to the grid. And the increased use of coal-fired power plants is also supported by a majority in the current “ARD Germany trend”.

In view of the high energy prices and the problems with gas imports from Russia, a majority of citizens believe that greater use of coal and nuclear power makes sense. In the new ARD “Germany trend”, 56 percent of the participants stated that they were in favor of using coal-fired power plants more, as the WDR announced on Thursday in Cologne. There was a majority for this position among people over 50, but not among younger people.

61 percent of the survey participants supported the continued operation of the German nuclear power plants beyond the previous phase-out date of the end of 2022. Among men, 67 percent were in favor of it, among women only 55 percent.

Above all, supporters of the Union (77 percent), the FDP (84 percent) and the AfD (88 percent) support longer nuclear power plant runtimes. But even among the SPD supporters, the approval predominates (54 percent). The supporters of the Greens, on the other hand, not only reject longer nuclear power plant runtimes (57 percent). They are also critical of the reactivation of coal-fired power plants proposed by Economics Minister Habeck (54).

The polling company Infratest dimap surveyed 1,248 eligible voters on Tuesday and Wednesday for the “Germany trend”. The statistical error tolerance was given as plus/minus two to three percentage points.

In the “heute journal” interview with Marietta Slomka, Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Green Party) calls on companies and consumers to save gas. On the other hand, he doesn’t think much of financial incentives, as a flippant answer shows.
