Sebastian Vettel is currently attracting more attention with his environmental protests than with race results. His latest action has brought him criticism from a Canadian environment minister.
How hypocritical is Vettel’s commitment to the environment? Sebastian Vettel is currently protesting against tar sand mining in Canada – a special form of oil production. Sonya Savage (55), Minister of the Environment of the affected Canadian province of Alberta, promptly intervened. She accuses Vettel of “hypocrisy”.
The politician tweeted: “I’ve seen a lot of hypocrisy over the years but this is the crowning glory. A racing driver from Aston Martin, which is financed by Saudi Aramco, complains about tar sands.” Before the Canada race, Vettel wore a T-shirt with the inscription “Stop tar sand mining”.
Retreat while running? After the accusation, Vettel did not wear a T-shirt and a helmet during the race, which also carried a protest label. Vettel declined to comment. Vettel’s team boss Mike Krack (50) said with a laugh to image: “He can’t wear the same shirt every day.”
