The canons’ cemetery on the grounds of Cologne Cathedral is to be renamed. The background is the heated gender debate. Although there are only gentlemen in the cemetery, the word should be removed from the name.
With the peace in the cemetery, it is over for the time being at the Cologne canon’s cemetery. Since 1925 the so-called Gottesacker on the east side of Cologne’s landmark is to be renamed. This is confirmed by master builder Peter Füssenich to the Cologne “Express”. “When we reopen the whole area next year, the cemetery will only be called Domfriedhof,” says Füssenich.
Even if the cathedral administration keeps up with the times, one thing is striking: so far only lords of creation lie in the canons’ cemetery – namely the cathedral canons, whose roots go back to the 12th century. But 55 grave sites are still free. And who knows what the time until then will also bring in the tradition-conscious Catholic Church.
Most recently, the cemetery was criticized mainly because of its desolate condition: garbage lying around, fences, grave slabs pushed together. As the “Express” further reports, several trees are to be planted on the site during the renovation work, the lawns better maintained and a black marble floor laid. When the cathedral cemetery reopens next year, it will not just be the name that has changed.
