Former Chancellor Angela Merkel described the refugee crisis as the “most emotional phase” of her chancellorship. However, she does not remember the time around 2015 as a “low point”.
“2015/2016 was an extremely strenuous time, but I was very strong inside,” Merkel told the editorial network Germany (RND). Merkel emphasized: “From my point of view, my actions in 2015 corresponded to the C of my party and Article 1 of the Basic Law.” The discussion about her decision to take in refugees was worth it. “But that was certainly the most emotional phase of my chancellorship,” declared Merkel.
Despite the considerable public and intra-union disputes during this time, Merkel said in retrospect: “I don’t see that as a low point at all. Some of the conflicts about Corona took me more with it.”
