For a long time, the clubs in the Premier League complained about discrimination, but now those responsible have listened to the players and officials. The league adjusts its substitution rules.

Five substitutions: The International Football Association (IFAB) is meeting in Doha on Monday. According to “BBC” at the top of the agenda: Five substitutes should also be allowed in the Premier League in the future. Similar to the other top European leagues, the coaches can now use their three breaks to substitute five instead of just three new players.

Short, compact, clear

Why not sooner? The rule change was introduced in May 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the Premier League was the only top division to return to the usual three substitutions per game the following season. Because: Small clubs felt that the rule would give teams with larger squads an unfair advantage.

Robot offside: In addition to the revised substitution rule, the IFAB in Doha also wants to discuss a semi-automatic offside technology. This could already be used at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The technology uses ten special cameras and several television cameras to decide an offside situation in a fraction of a second.
