Manuel Akanji and Borussia Dortmund will go their separate ways in the foreseeable future. In the coming year, the Swiss could go free of charge, but BVB still wants to collect a transfer fee. However, the interested parties are missing.
Akanji wants to leave: After four and a half years at Borussia Dortmund, Manuel Akanji wants to leave the club and rejected two offers to extend his contract in the spring. The contract of the 26-year-old Swiss ends in the summer of 2023, so a transfer would only be due this summer or in winter.
Short, compact, clear
There is a lack of interested parties: According to a report by “Bild”, BVB is planning a transfer fee of 30 million euros. The problem: there still doesn’t seem to be anyone seriously interested in paying this price. Probably also because the central defender is considered to be prone to injury and has to struggle with knee problems again and again.
BVB already has a successor: Akanji came to Dortmund from FC Basel in January 2018 for 21.5 million euros. For the coming season, however, Borussia have already signed two new central defenders in Niklas Süle (26) and Nico Schlotterbeck (22). Akanji threatens to become an expensive bench press or even a grandstand guest.
