For a short time, Mario Götze was the face of German football. In an interview he now talks about the difficult years at Bayern and compares his situation back then with that of Robert Lewandowski.
“I should have taken more time”: Looking at his three mixed seasons at Bayern, Mario Götze (30) thinks that patience was lacking at the time – on both sides. “I didn’t give myself this time, the club didn’t give it to me either, that’s an important factor,” he says in an interview with “L’Equipe”. Robert Lewandowski at Bayern and Karim Benzema in Madrid would have benefited from patience.
Short, compact, clear
More success through a different career path? Götze: “I’m just happy to be where I am. Maybe I would have had more titles if I went to Liverpool than Jurgen Klopp wanted me. But no one knows what my life would have been like.”
Bayern change as a turning point: Mario Götze switched from BVB to Munich in 2013 for 37 million euros. In 2016 it went back to Dortmund for 22 million euros. At both stations, he no longer fans his top form. He has been playing for PSV Eindhoven since October 2020.
