Manchester United have suffered a setback as they rebuild their squad for the new season. Frenkie de Jong from FC Barcelona gives the English a refusal, although his ex-coach would have liked to welcome him.
De Jong cancels: Manchester United failed to recruit defender Frenkie de Jong. The 26-year-old Dutchman said in an interview with “ESPN”: “I prefer to stay with Barcelona.” The English record champions missed out on qualifying for the Champions League with sixth place, and a change is planned.
No reunion with ten Hag: At the Red Devils, de Jong would have worked again with his Erik ten Hag, his coach from Ajax Amsterdam, who will take over the Englishman. Allegedly, he was keen to get De Jong, but according to the player there was no contact.
Staying despite setbacks: Frenkie de Jong joined Barca from Ajax in 2019 but the Catalans have been plagued by financial and sporting problems for some time. De Jong: “Barcelona is just my dream club. Even at a young age. I just said it too. I have never regretted my choice, even if I had hoped for more than I have achieved so far.”
