The existence of the Saxon grazers is threatened by wolves. In an open letter, the grazing livestock farmers call on Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) to actively support a population regulation of the wolf at federal level.
The letter presented on Friday states that young and newborn animals in grazing are easy prey for wolves. Despite the installation of fences, attacks showed that protective measures are no longer sufficient. “Species-appropriate grazing and the associated near-natural landscape management in favor of biological diversity are on the verge of extinction in Saxony in the medium term.”
According to the Saxon State Farmers’ Association, a total of 212 grazing animals fell victim to wolf attacks this year. The downward trend of recent years continues in parallel with sheep farming. The letter was signed by the Saxon Sheep and Goat Breeding Association, the State Hunting Association and the Free State’s Cattle Breeding Association.
