SAN JOSE (Calif.) — Tuesday night’s vote in a California city to require gun owners to have liability insurance was deemed the first of its kind in the United States.

Despite opposition from gun owners, who claimed it would violate their Second Amendment rights. They promised to sue.

This Silicon Valley city, home to approximately 1 million people, followed the lead of other Democratic-led municipalities that sought to reduce violence by enforcing stricter rules. Brady United, a national non-profit that fights gun violence, says San Jose passed the first similar law, even though others have been suggested.

Council members, which included several people who lost friends to gun violence, stated that it was a step towards addressing the “scourge” of gun violence that Sergio Jimenez, a Councilman, called “a scourge upon our society.”
