Rothwell is closing the chapter on “Insecure” in her life. She’s now writing more. Rothwell was the star of “The White Lotus” and stood out from a cast that gave stellar performances. Rothwell, who had in mind to write a romantic comedy, signed a major contract with ABC Signature to help develop new television projects. Along with Timothee Chalamet and Olivia Colman, she began filming “Wonka”, a secretive, high-budget series in London.
All this in one year.
Rothwell said that “it’s crazy” during a recent video chat with The Associated Press from London. “I couldn’t have predicted this moment, or what ‘Insecure” has done to get me to this point. I used to roll my eyes when Taylor Swift sang, “Aw shucks. Really me?” And now, I understand it because I feel this way all the time.
She is particularly excited about the ABC/Disney deal that will see her writing and star in a series. She said, “It’s something that’s been in me for some time.”
This show will bring together everything Rothwell has learned from “Insecure” as an actor, writer, producer, and, for the first time, director.
This includes creating an inclusive writer room and opportunities for female directors. It also means representing all people, even those with disabilities. Rothwell wants the show’s attention to focus on the most important issues to her, such as voting and bodily autonomy.
Rothwell has been using a platform since she was first given it. She uses it to speak out against injustices and show her disapproval for certain politicians. During Donald Trump’s presidency, she tweeted “You are trash” daily. George Gov. is her new target. Brian Kemp, who she tweets daily, “You’re trash”
She describes the tweets as “a daily meditation for myself to remind me that this isn’t normal.”
“There are so many issues… She said that the list seemed endless and overwhelming. Sometimes all I can do it tweet. Sometimes I’m able to fire off a tweet, but other times, I have more energy.
Rothwell, a Black woman living in the world, believes it is important to shine a light on police brutality, disenfranchisement and other issues.
She said that she was at lunch the day before and had some racism done to her. The incident took place at a London restaurant. “If he knew me, my experience might have been different,” she said.
This is why she hopes to star in a romcom. She wants audiences to see a curvy Black woman as the central character of her story.
She said that all women of color are often the prop in rom-coms. They’re the best friend and nurse, the wise and sage person who will tell you how to find your true love. It is important to have a plus-sized woman of color in the middle of the story.
She couldn’t find it onscreen growing up. Instead, she had to do mental gymnastics in order to project herself onto the thin, white protagonists.
She said, “If I had seen plus-size romance coms growing older, I would have felt entitled love.” “And that sounds more sad than I think it is… but I want to be in a position to create a romcom that doesn’t have so many technical gymnastics for viewers who look like me.”
Rothwell is currently focusing on her ABC/Disney project and two other HBO projects. She also films “Wonka”, a prequel to the classic 1971 film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” starring Gene Wilder.
It’s a huge, massive, massive, enormous production. She said that it’s the largest production she’s ever been part of. “I thought there would be six dancers when I went to the rehearsal. It was 75. It was 75.
Rothwell, an Anglophile, said that she has been giddy about working with some of her heroes like Rowan Atkinson (“Mr. Bean”) and Jim Carter (“Downton Abbey”) as she is an Anglophile. Chalamet is another option.
Rothwell, 41, said that Rothwell is “just like, this ballof energy who’s like… awesome and cool.” It makes me feel more cool just by being near him. “I feel like my grandmother right here.
Rothwell also tries to be present in the moment. Rothwell said that she can get overwhelmed if she doesn’t.
She said, “I’m just really trying to white knuckle all the present.” “But yes, I have a lot fun stuff cooking.”
