The chairman of the information commission of the Moscow City Diocese, Priest Alexander Volkov, commented on the incident with a Russian woman who got stuck in an ancient sarcophagus during a vacation in Cyprus. This is reported by RIA Novosti.

As the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church noted, such incidents with tourists cause chagrin. He noted that religious shrines should be treated with respect. Volkov explained that in the worship of shrines, “the moment of participation is important, which is not necessarily associated with touches, tactile sensations.”

The priest recalled the cases from the Middle Ages, when people gnawed the tombs with their teeth and pulled them apart to take away the pieces of the shrine. “Modern people do not need to be like medieval pilgrims, we must try to keep ourselves in hand,” Volkov concluded.

Earlier it was reported that in Cyprus, during an excursion to the church of St. Lazarus in Larnaca, a Russian tourist climbed into the tomb for the sake of a spectacular photo and got stuck in an ancient sarcophagus. As the traveler later explained, she wanted to take an original photo with a popular attraction, but could not get out of the sarcophagus on her own.
