The project was called “Paleozoic”. In the region, its key participants are Gazpromneft-Vostok and the National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU). The project was presented at the exhibition “Greater Siberia” at the SPIEF. There, the chairman of the Gazprom Neft Management Board, Alexander Dyukov, and the Governor of the Tomsk Region, Sergey Zhvachkin, agreed to create a technological landfill in the region to search for “difficult” oil.

The prospects for the development of oil production are associated with the” Paleozoic ” not only in the Tomsk region, but also in other Siberian regions. It is planned that in 2024-2025 the technology will be replicated for the study and development of Paleozoic resources in the KhMAO and YaNAO.

At the Tomsk Polytechnic University at the forum of young scientists U-NOVUS-2021, representatives of relevant ministries, the regional administration, business and science discussed the development of the project. According to Maxim Kirzhimanov, Deputy director of the Department of State Policy and Regulation in the field of geology and subsurface use of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, it is planned to amend the law “On Subsurface Resources”, which would provide opportunities for the creation and operation of landfills for the development of technologies for geological exploration, exploration and production of TRIZ. The next step should be the formation of polygons and consortia to work with them. As part of the development of the Paleozoic, we are also talking about the creation of a joint venture that will provide oilfield services.

“In the “Paleozoic”, the Tomsk Polytechnic University plays a key, integrating role. A whole ecosystem of various kinds of initiative educational, research projects with all participants is being formed around it, “said Alexey Vashkevich, Director of Technological Development at Gazprom Neft. According to the TPU, it is planned to work out both search and production technologies and technologies that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere – decarbonization-at the technological landfill. This will reduce by a third the amount of carbon dioxide released during the extraction of minerals, including “difficult” oil.

For the Paleozoic project, a digital file sharing service “Data Room” was introduced, which reduces the time of “communication” between participants. “Our colleagues posted information about the research results in the “room”, we combined it with our material and as a result got a more accurate picture of the structure of the Paleozoic. In the future, this will help to identify areas of rocks with a high proportion of oil and gas content, ” said Dmitry Konoshonkin, a research engineer at the TPU Geology Laboratory.

In the future, it is planned to develop the digital platform “Paleozoic” on the basis of TPU – an innovative solution that includes a virtual model of the landfill, a single and accessible online database for research and pilot tests.
