The first President of independent Belarus Stanislau Shushkevich has urged the incumbent head of state Alexander Lukashenko to resign. He stated this in an interview with radio station “Moscow speaking”.
According to Shushkevich, Lukashenka illegally holds the presidency for years. He also pointed out the problems in the economy and admitted that he was surprised by the number of protesters.
“we Have no economic policy, we have cadres decide everything, and the footage began to play. We have a huge debt, — said the politician. — And the people overcame his fear, this avalanche of people I never saw, and could not think that so many protesters take to the streets”.
12 Aug Shushkevich called Lukashenko “nerezidenta”, noting his “professional stupidity”. Then he said to change the situation in Belarus can only be the resistance of the protesters.
August 9, in Belarus presidential elections were held, according to the CEC of the Republic, by a large margin Lukashenka won. Then in Minsk and other cities started to protest. The participants do not agree with the official results of the vote and call for new, fair elections. The demonstrations resulted in clashes with Riot police, during which dozens of people got injured.
Shushkevich served as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Belarus from 1991 to 1994. He is a longtime opposition of Lukashenka’s policy.
