the US government should agree to extend the Russian-American Treaty on measures for the further reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms (SNV-3). This was stated by former assistant to the 44 th U.S. President Barack Obama on national security, Thomas Donilon, during a speech at the annual security forum, organized by the Institute Uspenskim.
“I extend a start-3”, – he noted, answering the question, what advice would you give the current leadership of the United States. According to him, Washington has the opportunity to return to the negotiating table and to extend the contract. “I don’t understand why we can’t do that,” he said. Donilon also stated that in the US there are discussions on the inclusion of China in a very complex tripartite agreement in the field of arms control, however, in his opinion, such a question now “is not on the agenda”, writes TASS.
earlier, democratic Senator from California Dianne Feinstein said that the administration of Donald trump should immediately agree to extend the start-3. According to her, this U.S.-Russian agreement is “vitally important” from the point of view of arms control.
start-3, signed in 2010, is the only existing agreement between Russia and the USA on the limitation of armaments. The period of validity expires in February 2021. Moscow has repeatedly indicated it is prepared to extend the start-3 without any preconditions. Trump also expressed the desire to develop new trilateral nuclear agreement between Russia, China and the United States. However, Beijing rejected this idea.
