the Initiative is aimed at tightening existing sanctions against Russian pipelines. In the amendment we are talking about introduction of restrictions against foreign persons who contribute significantly to the sale, lease, or provide ships for the laying of pipes for construction of gas pipelines.
on 17 July, the European Union (EU) has criticized unilateral sanctions that threaten to introduce US in respect of the gas pipeline “Nord stream-2” and “Turkish stream”. According to EU high representative for foreign Affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell, such measures are contrary to international law.
July 15, Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said that the US state Department to include in the projects, which fall under sanctions, “Nord stream-2” and “Turkish stream”. According to him, the projects will act the restrictive measures provided for by the law “On combating the enemies of America by sanctions” (CAATSA).
At the end of last year, the United States imposed sanctions against Russian gas pipeline “Nord stream-2” and “Turkish stream”. The official reason is called the protection of the European energy security.
the gas Pipeline “Nord stream-2” from Russia to Germany under the Baltic sea was supposed to start in late 2019. The project launch date was postponed to the turn of the 2020-2021 years, first because of the position of Denmark, which did not coordinate the route of the project through their water, and then because of US sanctions against companies involved in the project.
