Member of the house of representatives from Georgia John Lewis, regarded as one of the most prominent advocates for the rights of black people, died Friday at the age of 80 years. This was announced by the speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi.

"Today, America mourns the loss of one of the greatest heroes of American history, Congressman John Lewis, who was the conscience of the Congress," – said in its statement.

In December 2019, the politician was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the last stage, but he promised then that he would continue to represent in Congress his district.

Lewis was one of the organizers of the famous March on Washington held in 1963, Martin Luther king. In Congress, he was first held in 1986 and since then 17 times in a row held this elected position, representing one of the districts of the city of Atlanta.

Lewis was one of the outspoken critics of the White house of Donald trump. So, after the Republican victory in the elections, he announced that for the first time since the election of a Congressman is going to miss the inauguration of the next President of the country, because it doesn’t consider trump a legitimately elected head of state.
