Every week the staff of the Moscow libraries suggest what books you should read with young children, and what to discuss with older guys. The librarian of the Central city children’s library named after A. P. Gaidar Julia barrow-Ishmuratova chose books that will help you talk with children on the most difficult topics.
“the Pine trees rustle” Irina Tokmakova
this year we in the library pay much attention to the great Patriotic war. Kids explain things is not easy, but necessary. Well, there are many books on this subject, in which everything that happens is described through the eyes of children who lived in the time of war.
And one of such works — autobiographical novel “Pines noise”, based on the memoirs of writer Irina Tokmakova about her military childhood. She tells about the children in the evacuation that were in the house of a child, the adults who tried by all means to help them. Mother Irina Petrovna was in charge of one of these houses, so these children have always been in the eyes of the future writer.
Written in easy — understand any baby who is not yet going to school. The division into short stories make the book very easy to read before bed. Here, of course, no descriptions of bombings, hunger and deprivation, but the tragedy of war is felt in the details. With this book you can safely start familiarizing the child with the history of the great Patriotic war.
“Brown morning” by Frank Pavloff

But parents, of course, will see all of this deeper meaning.

“the Boy in the striped pyjamas” by John Boyne
The plot of the book, probably known to many parents on the eponymous film in 2008 by Director mark Herman. By the way, it is possible to see the whole family after reading the book.
It is a difficult affair. Its theme — the Holocaust, the mass extermination of Jews during the Second world war. In the book faced two different worlds, separated by barbed wire: the world of a German boy, Bruno, the main character, and a Jewish boy Shmuel. The author deliberately shows how naive children are immersed in their children’s problems and until recently unaware of what was going on in Auschwitz, one of the most infamous concentration camps of Poland. Interesting observation: me as a parent to read this book it was hard, but children are usually very exciting the story itself.
the book has historical inaccuracies, so I can’t recommend it to fans of the documentary (they are among children, and among parents). Although, in my opinion, these inaccuracies do not detract from nor its artistic value, nor the impression which it produces.
“Cloud regiment” Edward Verkin
“Cloud regiment” has received two prestigious literary awards. Its author — the recipient of numerous awards and over other books — I know not only children but also adults who follow the latest developments in domestic fiction. He wrote, for example, the novel “Island of Sakhalin” (2018).
