Protests in Washington, D.C., turned into a riot when the guards were forced out of Lafayette square, the demonstrators tried to demolish a statue of seventh US President Andrew Jackson, reports NBC News.
Protesters knocked down a temporary fence around the statue, some climbed up on it to tie the rope. The crowd surrounding the statue, shouted: “Andrew Jackson must go!”, RIA “Novosti”.
Clashes with police began when police tried to form a barrier around the statue. The police sprayed pepper spray into the side of the protesters.
Before that, four police officers were injured trying to remove the tents from the area of Lafayette, who blocked the street and H Street. The protesters were thrown at officers for various items, several people were detained.
